Enhance Your Web Browser IQ with Chrome Extensions

by the design genius on March 21, 2010

With so many browser extensions available it’s easy to get overwhelmed.  I decided to write this Blog to help you identify some of the most useful browser extensions without having to spend hours searching the galleries. Hopefully after reading this you will have been inspired to try a few of these extensions out for yourself.

This  Blog will only be detailing Google Chrome extensions.  Why is that?  Well….it’s simple.  Unless you are a web developer Google Chrome is probably the best browser.  Let’s look at why I believe Google Chrome is better than the competition.

  1. It runs faster than the other browsers
  2. It has the cleanest interface
  3. Good security
  4. Great extensions

Download Google Chrome and test it for yourself.  If you don’t think it’s better than your old browser than post a comment and tell me why you don’t like it.  Ok, lets jump right in, shall we?  Here’s the link to the Google Chrome extensions gallery.  Click on any of the titled extensions to jump straight to the download/review page for that extension.

AdBlockNot much to say about this one except that it works beautifully.  Download this one immediately and almost every ad or popup will get blocked making your internet experience a much smoother ride.

Better Gmail – If your using Gmail this extension is brilliant.  Have a look at the options.  This will clean up the interface of pretty much everything your not going to use.

Google Mail Checker Plus – Combine better Gmail with this extension and you’ll get a notifier in the extensions bar that will show you how much unread mail you have as well as a shortcut to Gmail and a shortcut to your newest messages.

Send Using Gmail - This will set Gmail to be your default Email application.  Whenever you click an email link it will automatically compose a new message in Gmail without adding any new buttons to your extensions bar.

FreshStart – This extension is amazing!  It’s a session manager that will allow you to save all your tabs, combine or remove tabs from different windows, and your saved sessions will be added to a folder in bookmarks allowing you to synchronize it with other computers.  As you can see I save the tabs from my brother’s work so this works perfectly if you have multiple users on one computer.  If you don’t it still works as a beautiful tab saver.  As a side note it is worth mentioning Session Buddy which is pretty much the same thing but with a different interface.

Shareaholic for Google Chrome – A very nice extension that allows you to share any webpage you are at with over 100 different services.  Click on the service you want to share the webpage with and it will minimize the effort that goes into sharing.

RSS Subscription Extension – This is going to add the little orange RSS subscription to your Navigation bar allowing an easy one click RSS subscription to any web page.

YouTube Search - This adds a YouTube search into your toolbar.  Simple as that….see it in action below.

Chrome Notepad – Jot down any thoughts or notes without having to open a seperate application.  Easy to use and integrated into your browser.

Cooliris – This one is really cool.  I only advise people with a good computer to try this one out because slower computers can get bogged down.  What this extension does is essentially turn your Image searches into a 3D wall of pictures showing 1000′s of images that you can quickly scan.

TooManyTabs for Chrome – If you bring up a lot of tabs in your browser than this extension will save you a headache by organizing that clutter for you.  It does much more than this.  You’ll get a bird’s eye view of all your open tabs.  You can suspend certain tabs to save bandwidth.  You can restore closed tabs as well as perform a search.  See it in action below.

Clickable Links – Very useful and very easy to use.  If a website didn’t make it’s links clickable then this extension will do it for them.

FastestChrome - My favorite aspect of this extension is that it will turn your Search into one long page.  This will save you time of constantly having to hit next page.  It has a few more added perks such as allowing quick definition searches or Google searches.  Look at the picture below to see how it combines search pages into one long page.

Everymark - If your bookmarks are a cluttered mess than this extension will allow you to perform quick searches directly from the extensions bar.  Very convenient and worth taking a look at.

Tabs to the Front – New tabs will be shown right away instead of having to click them after opening a new tab.

Turn off the Lights – A button will pop up when watching video giving you a quick option to dim everything in the background but the video.

Facebook Rounder – This will add a little spice to your Facebook page.  Take a look.  I hid all the posts but you get the idea.  Notice how the boxes are smoothed down with this extension.Ok, everyone…I’ll post some more extensions later on.  Please let me know what you think about this Blog or these extensions.  Feel free to tell me about extensions you feel I should include in the next post.  You can also click one of the bookmarking icons below to share this story!
